THE THRILL OF A MEMORY
“Before reaching it, we would meet the smell of his lilacs, coming out to greet the strangers. From among the fresh green little hearts of their leaves, the flowers would curiously lift above the gate of the park their tufts of mauve or white feathers, glazed, even in the shade, by the sun in which they had bathed….”
This is how Marcel Proust, in his work In Search of Lost Time, describes his memory of Lilac flowers.
And even earlier, in ancient times, legends and symbols were attributed to this marvellous shrub.
For example, it was believed that fairies loved being among Lilacs, so they could enjoy the enchanting scent of these flowers or even just have a restorative break. According to tradition the plant protected the area it was planted in against evil spirits and purified it.
In the language of flowers, Lilacs still have so many meanings, including innocence and sincerity. But its most evocative meaning is, without a doubt, that it is a symbol of sincere love and of the emotions that two lovers feel during their first encounter.
THE PERFUME OF SERENITY
One feature that has made Lilacs famous in time, is its floral and truly “carefree” fragrance. Few, very few shrubs can actually match the unmistakable perfume that Lilacs exude in April and May! These little flowers, so minute and surrounded by heart-shaped leaves, know how to fill the air of gardens, making it irresistible.
According to popular tradition, the perfume of Lilacs can also alleviate concerns and anxieties by dissolving tension and emotionally stressful situations.
